La Pedriza

La Pedriza is part of the Guadarrama Mountains, situated just north of Madrid and is not well know outside Spain. It is the European version of Yosemite's Toulomne Meadow featuring run-out friction slab climbing up granite domes. Although most of the routes do have holds but often the difficulty of the routes comes down to the angle of the slab and how spaced those holds are. Many routes are bolted however don't be surprised if you are gripped reaching next one as most of these routes are not clip-ups. Some will require extra trad gear whilst other are full trad experiences even if they are bolted.
Climbing here is not your typical relaxing bolt-clipping in the sun type of holiday. Expect adventure and all the good things you get from trad climbing and you won't be disappointed. Also, don't be surprised if you arms wither away as the only things that are likely to get pumped here are your calves.

Approach
From Madrid, head north on the M-607 towards Tres Cantos. Just past Comenar Viejo, take the M-609 towards Soto del Real then the M-608 towards Manzanares el Real. Stay on this road, straight on by a roundabout with a cat statue, past the impressive Castillo Del Los Mendoza and straight on at a roundabout with a mountaineer statue. The turning to Pedriza is 0.5km on the right after this last roundabout. Follow the road as it turns left towards the park. After about 500m, you reach the gateway to the park. There is a gate here that is sometimes closed at busy times. To be sure of getting in you need to arrive before 10am. Walking from here would take around 1 hour. An alternative approach can be made from a parking area to the north of Manzanares el Real. Turn right at the roundabout with the mountaineer and then take the second left, just over a bridge. Follow this road for 2.5km to parking at its end by a restaurant - Casa Julian.
The climbing areas described here can all be reached from either of these two parking areas.
