Coire an t-Sneachda

The northern edge of the Cairngorm plateau, to the east of the great through pass of the Lairig Ghru, is formed by Cairn Gorm - Scotland\'s sixth highest mountain. It\'s northern flanks overlook the Spey Valley and are the location of Scotland\'s principal ski centre ??\" Cairn Gorm Mountain. Extending westwards from the summit of Cairn Gorm and its ski slopes are the two Northern Corries, Corrie an t-Sneachada and Coire an Lochain, one of Scotland\'s best and most important winter playgrounds for the Climber. Doe to their northerly aspect and their height the corries come into winter condition rapidly and it is common to have a seven month long winter season lasting from early October to early April.

Coire an t-Sneachda is the central of the three north facing corries of Cairn Gorm. It is separated from Coire Cas, the main ski area, by the Fiacaill a\' Choire Chais and from Coire an Lochain on its west by the Fiacaill Coire an t-Sneachda (unnamed on the 1:50000 map). The latter, usually known as the Fiacaill Ridge, is a hump-backed ridge which steepens after a shallow col to form a narrow rocky ridge leading to the plateau near Cairn Lochan, the westerly top of Cairn Gorm.

The corrie itself is deceptive in size as it has a recess which extends westwards. This cannot be seen from the Glenmore area and it contains a large mass of rock buttressing the Fiacaill Ridge. Due to the wealth of good easy and middle grade routes, combined with the ease of access, this is a very popular corrie.

This first release contains an extensive selection of routes in Coire an t-Sneachda.
