The “Notched Ridge” linking the two Munros of Sgòrr nam Fiannaidh (967m) and Meall Dearg (953m) is probably Scotland\'s most famous scramble, its traverse a lifetime objective for many hillgoers. It will rarely disappoint. A high mountain ridge with four major summits and innumerable pinnacles, the crest is often extremely exposed and some of the scrambling is surprisingly steep, but positive holds abound. In places avoiding routes have developed down the sides, but these are usually very loose and keeping to the well-used crest is almost always better. The rock is generally sound, if polished, but loose holds inevitably develop occasionally, especially in the Spring so care is needed. The traverse is committing, with no sensible descents southwards between Am Bodach and Sgòrr nam Fiannaidh. The north ridges of Meall Dearg and Stob Coire Leith are feasible descents northwards but both are very rough and leave you a long way from the usual starting point.
