[As written] Probably refers to the Earl of Lennox, whose castle stood on the southern flank of the Campsie Fells.
‘Winter climbing? In the Campsies?
Surely not...'
But it's true. Although the Campsie Fells aren't exactly renowned for their rugged mountaineering terrain, a good freeze can open up some interesting opportunities. From a climber's point of view, the best of these lie in the Corrie of Balglass near Fintry, where the spectacular icefall of Moonlight Completion forms. The Campsies can also claim to be birthplace of Scottish skiing: Willie Naismith (the driving force behind the formation of the SMC) made the first recorded ski outing in Scotland in the Campsies in 1890.
