[Krech Vyn] Gaelic, meaning Hill of Spoils or Plunder, reflecting the history of cattle-rustling between clans in the area.
Creach Bheinn and its easterly top Maol Odhar form part of a lovely horseshoe of hills around Glen Galmadale with beautiful views out over Loch Linnhe.
Indeed, it is such a good viewpoint that it had a ‘Colby Camp', a major camp used by the Ordnance Survey in their original triangulation of Scotland in the mid 19th century. The remains of that camp are still visible just north of the summit. Most visitors approach from the south to walk the horseshoe, but the crags are on the north side so are best accessed from Glen Tarbet.
