Sgùrr Ghiubhsachain

[Skoor YOU-sa-chan] Gaelic, meaning Peak of the Fir Trees.
This peak is best known as the backdrop to the Glenfinnan Memorial, which commemorates Bonnie Prince Charlie raising the Stuart standard to start the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion.
The North-North-East ridge is a popular summer scramble, but the hill is rarely visited in winter and development of its winter climbing potential has only recently begun.
The classic scramblers' circuit up Sgùrr Ghiubhsachain's North-North-East ridge then over Sgùrr Croabh a' Chaorainn gives a magnificent winter outing, never particularly technical but tricky enough in places to warrant Grade I. There are numerous rocky outcrops on the way up Sgùrr Ghiubhsachain which could be included to make this harder (see the SMC Highland Scrambles North guidebook for more information), but going by the line of least resistance will mean most can do it unencumbered by ropes and rack. Some easy lines have been climbed on the broken crags overlooking Loch Sheil north-west of the summit, but the best routes are on the north-east-facing Jacobite Buttress.
