The Marmolada, derived from the ancient Greek word marmairo meaning 'sparkle', is a complex chain of peaks that run from east to west. The superb Marmolada West Ridge via ferrata provides the most-frequented ascent route to the summit of Punta Penia, the highest point in the Dolomites at 3343m. On the Marmolada's northeast flank is the huge slab of Punta Serauta and the recently-re-equipped Via Ferrata Eterna Brigata Cadore, which ascends to the mid station of the three-stage Malga Ciapela cable car and is also highly recommended.
