Carl Wark is the lower of the two plateaux that sit in the heart of the Burbage Valley. Its flat crest is ringed, particularly to the northwest, by ancient fortifications. A fault line runs between the two plateaux and explains the difference in height - it can be seen running away between Burbage North and South edges. The crag is only a minor venue, but the routes on the Left-hand Buttresses give a decent collection of easier climbs which get morning sun and afternoon shade - unusual for Eastern Grit. The Right-hand Buttress is more impressive but is nearly always in poor condition.
