The Promenade

A popular and impressive sport climbing venue, The Promenade also has a handful of steep and powerful boulder problems for the really keen. It has been described in this book mainly for historical reasons. The first ascents of some of the problems were done in the early 1990s by Pete Oxley and pushed the grades in Dorset at the time. Unless you are confident scrambling down a 25m Diff with a bouldering mat on your back the approach involves an abseil, which takes much more effort than the average boulderer is accustomed to. For starters you need to bring a harness and a rope, which some boulderers don't even own! Getting out at the end of the day isn't any easier and it is best to haul your bouldering mats out on the end of your abseil rope. Despite all the difficulties the bouldering is excellent and, if you get the tides, sea swell, and conditions in your favour, you can have a great time here.
