A local curiosity, Cathedral Quarry is a huge hole in the ground that has been hewn out of the slate. It is now best known for its easily reached cave and handful of popular rock climbs. The routes around the yawning cave entrance are well worth a look, being fairly steep, on good rock and reasonably well protected. The rock is solid and the whole place is less intimidating than the nearby Hodge Close Quarry, making it a good first port of call for a Lakeland slate experience. There are a number of other routes dotted around the walls which are not described here - many are in need of re-equipping.
This is a popular spot with walkers so take great care not to dislodge any rock.
