Scogliera di Salinella - North

Scogliera di Salinella is a stretch of coastline that runs for 4.5 km along the west coast of the San Vito Lo Capo peninsula. In this book it has been split into five separate areas for clarity of coverage. The north end is the most isolated section where the impressive cliff reaches up to 50m in places. The best of the climbing is in the mid-grades with some real classics on offer. There are a number of routes in the top grades, usually in or near the series of pear-shaped caves that are spread along this section of the cliff. Two areas have been developed with easier routes in the green spot range. The sectors are quite spread out in places and the undeveloped sections could well have routes added in future, many of which are likely to be in the more amenable grades.
The section of coastline to the south of the last sector is referred to as the 'The Moon' due to its moon-like terrain. It is difficult to cross, especially with a heavy rucksack on your back, and as such climbers rarely connect the North area to the Central area on foot.
This is one of the first areas that was developed which means there are a few routes with old bolts. These are slowly being replaced but, at the time of writing, the Grotta dei Santi and Grotta di Atze have old bolts and should be avoided.
