Houghton Graveyard

To the north of Houghton le Spring is a very old limestone quarry which has been developed into a sport climbing crag. The quarrying stopped in the 19th Century when it was turned into the local graveyard hence the name. The set of walls that now remain offer series of routes in the mid -to-hard grades that give technical and mostly vertical climbing on small holds. A few trad routes were climbed in the past and some of these remain. The area below the crag is pleasant although the paths to the buttresses can be nettle bound. Climbers should remember that this is a burial ground and you are asked to be keep a low profile.
