Almscliff

Yorkshire's finest and no arguments are allowed. A warty lump of premier quality gritstone that is perched on the windy hillside between Leeds and Harrogate, looking out over rolling farmland.

Almscliff is a venue best suited to honing gritstone technique rather then learning it, though lessons learnt here will serve you well and take you far. The rock is hard and coarse, flared breaks and rounded holds are the order of the day. The crag has been climbed on for over 100 years and many of climbing's greats have left their mark here - welcome to the Academy.
Conditions
The crag faces all points of the compass. It takes no drainage and dries soon after the rain stops, though its lofty position means it can be cold and windy up here - there is little shelter to be found. The farmer chooses to graze his cattle around the crag, the pats are not a problem but the slurry that develops in wet weather is less pleasant.
