Ponta Garcia

The atmospheric venue of Ponta Garcia, just a few kilometres outside Sagres, was Portugal's first DWS discovery, with routes established between 2001 and 2006. Garcia offers two distinct features: the wacky Fossil Cave, with tufa jugs and steepness guaranteed; and the three-piece Garcia Wall, with more jug-fests on superb rock. It's a great venue, with the approaches to the routes using either a traverse in, or a dry-bag swim-in - although I hear the local shops are now doing a roaring trade in kiddy play boats! Add to this plenty of unrealised projects, the Beliche Beach (some 300m distant) and a clutch of local cafés and restaurants, and you have a DWS spot that will stand the test of time. Although it might never rival the more recently developed Ingrina for steady grades and ease of access, Garcia is now firmly on the more advanced deep water soloists away-list.
