The Drake Stone

Reputedly Northumberland's biggest boulder; this interesting little venue is in a lovely setting and has enough at each grade to pass a couple of hours for most folk. Doing all the routes here in one visit would be quite an impressive achievement though.
The block faces all directions with the slabby east face and steep west face giving the best climbing. The routes generally are short and sharp and protection is lacking on many of the climbs, although there are some cracks that give the odd runner. Belaying on top of the block requires a bit of ingenuity. The easiest way down is via the chipped ladder and easy angled ramp of Tourist Route on the east face. Probably the most impressive feature of the rock is the current bedding formed when the rock was originally deposited.
