The Cuttings

A fabulous crag that is now established as the most popular sport climbing venue in the south of the UK. With its large number of climbs spread across the grades, great weather, sheltered aspect and easy access a day rarely goes by without something getting done. Most of the climbing is technical and sustained with the odd crack and corner cropping up to provide some variety. As a welcome bonus the bolting is usually fairly friendly. Although at busy times it can become crowded, however there are plenty of climbs to go round and a wander off to the lesser visited sections of the crag or outlying spots will often pay dividends. It can become very hot here and during these periods the shade of the afternoon will provide the best conditions whilst in the colder months it can be pleasantly warm on sunny mornings when most of the rest of the UK is wet, windy, cold or all three. There is also a very well-used beginners\' wall (The Bonsai Area) set up for groups and individuals to cut their teeth on, which has an array of short, bolted routes in the lower grades - however be aware, these are polished and many are poorly bolted and not pleasant for learning to lead on. In front of The Cuttings is a massive area of boulders, scree and dense vegetation that runs down to the sea - this is the The Cuttings Boulderfield which is fully covered in the Rockfax book Dorset Bouldering
