The Promenade

The first of the sport climbing crags passed on the approach from Durlston Country Park, The Promenade is one of the best roof climbing crags in the south of England. The long stretch of tiered overhangs yield a host of powerful pitches that are well-equipped and on solid rock. Whilst not particularly high the climbing is sustained and often both powerful and technical. The paucity of lines in the mid and lower grades is noticeable but most of those described are worthwhile and it is easy to combine a visit with the nearby Unknown Ledge or Cattle Troughs. The big flat belay ledges at the base of the crag are another of The Promenade\'s enticing features, although they are prone to being wave-washed even in moderate seas - watch out for that seventh wave and where you leave your rucksacks and kit!
