Vajolet Towers

The Vajolet towers are one of the most famous rock formations in the Dolomites and have become an iconic symbol for climbing in the region. They were featured in the now infamous opening scene of the Sylvester Stallone film 'Cliffhanger'. Viewed from Rifugio Re Alberto (Gartlhütte), the trio of towers are an impressive sight. However the true cause for their fame becomes immediately apparent when first stepping on to the arete of the classic Piaz Arete/Delagokante. The ground suddenly plunges down some 500m to the valley bottom giving astonishing exposure. This makes the Piaz Arete/Delagokante one of the most celebrated climbs in the area and a rite of passage for many visiting the Dolomites. Whilst Torre Delago steals the show, the other towers also have some excellent climbing and should not be overlooked. The abseil descents conveniently deposit you at the start of the climb on the next tower. In this way it is perfectly possible to climb all three towers, in a fantastic single day of climbing. All the climbs have well-equipped belay stances and a good number of pegs can be found on the routes. All of this comes at a cost however and, as a result of the tower's reputation and generally amenable route grades, don't expect to find any solitude here. During peak season it is not uncommon for every stance of the Piaz Arete/Delagokante to be occupied. Thus an early start (from the rifugio if possible) is recommended if you want to complete all three towers. If crowding does becomes a problem the Steger direct on Torre Winkler is highly recommended. Just make sure your party's up to it - this little gem of a route is usually quiet for a reason.
