The Geisler horseshoe consists of five peaks. From left to right - Piccolo Fermeda, Grande Fermeda, Odla di Cisles, Sass de Mesdi and Sass Rigais. These have excellent climbs up to 19 pitches in length. The exception is the far peak Sass Rigais which isn't renowned for its traditional climbing but does have a brilliant via ferrata that provides a long and very worthwhile day. Ortisei and the Seceda cable car - The lift is open from mid June to early October, though it is always worth checking with the tourist information office first. The lift station is well signed from Ortisei. Take the lift to the top station, then head east following signs for 'via ferrata Sas Rigais'. The south faces will quickly become visible. Santa Cristina and the Col Raiser gondola - The lift is open between early June and early October. It is clearly signed from either of the roundabouts leading into the village. There is a paid car park at the bottom. From the top of the lift, the Odle Peaks are clearly arranged in a large horseshoe in front of you with clear paths leading to the base of the climbs. On foot - For those wanting to climb the peaks out of season, or if you don't want to pay for the lift, it is possible to walk up to the Alpe di Cisles meadows. The best way is from the car park of the Col Raiser gondola. The path is well signed to 'Col Raiser' and 'Firenze' and will add about an hour to the approach times. The Odle (Geisler in German) is a group of peaks situated just north of the main Val Gardena valley between Ortisei and Selva and above Santa Cristina. The peaks themselves rise up out of the Alpine meadows of Alpe di Cisles and the surrounding scenery is simply stunning. The area is reached using the Col Raiser gondola that runs from Santa Cristina, or the Seceda cable car from Ortisei. The climbing here is not particularly well known, which is surprising when you consider the quality of the routes and the relative ease of access. The routes are generally in the easier grades but give long mountain days, reaching prominent and exposed peaks. This makes it perfect for those who enjoy easier climbing but still want the full mountain experience culminating on an impressive peak. There is a variety of rifugios up on the plateau with the Firenze being the obvious place to stay if you are planning on spending a couple of days here.
