Sass Dlacia

Sass Dlacia is one of the largest sport crags in the region, offering a wide range of routes across the grades. The majority of the routes are on the impressive west face of Sass Dlacia itself, with routes up to 120m and five pitches. Nestled in the surrounding woodlands are some subsidiary boulders and even an elegant little tower providing excellent climbing. The crag is easily accessed from the bottom of the Valparola Pass and is only a 10 minute walk from Camping Sass Dlacia, making it an extremely convenient venue. There is even a picnic and BBQ area which can be used (contact the San Cassiano tourist office to reserve the BBQ for an evening). The extent of the site and number of routes means it is easy to find solitude here, even during peak season. The crag is split into seven sectors (see overview on page 304). Paid parking at Rifugio Capanna Alpina - Turn left onto a small road immediately before the bridge following signs for the rifugio. Pass the quarry and continue to the large car park at the end of the road. Cross the stream adjacent to the car park via a bridge following path number 11. When the path forks turn left to reach the BBQ area. Free parking near Camping Sass Dlacia - Continue over the bridge. Park on the left (be careful not to park in the way of the bus stop) just past the turn into camping Sass Dlacia. Head to the northeast corner of the car park and follow path 11, signed to 'Capanna Alpina' and 'Fanes'. Continue through a small park and volleyball court. Cross the small camping Sass Dlacia road and follow the path on its left to the end of the campsite. Continue on the gravel track until, after a further 100m, a small path leads off right (this takes you to Sector G in a further 100m). Continue straight on, passing a small chapel (the 'Tru de Meditaziun') on your right, until the track forks (a small path leads off right into the woods uphill for 5 minutes to Sector F). Turn right at the fork and follow the track for another 50m until the track forks again. The gravel track turns left and leads to the BBQ area. Limited free parking on the second hairpin of the Valparola Pass - Continue on the main road, passing Camping Sass Dlacia, to park on the corner of the second hairpin (three cars only). Individual sector approaches will be described from the BBQ site as it's a good point of reference. Walk behind the barrier and follow a small but well-trodden climbers' footpath in an easterly direction through the woods. After 5 minutes you reach the tower of Sector E.
