From a climbing point of view, Piccolo Lagazuoi has two faces to consider. The south and west faces both offer enjoyable climbing at amenable grades. Many of the routes are relatively short so can be easily combined with exploring the tunnels. The views from the top of the Lagazuoi are some of the best in the Dolomites, making the whole experience, even by Dolomite standards, a real treat. The tunnels on Lagazuoi extend from the base of Piccolo Lagazuoi to the subsidiary summit just below the cable car and can be walked either in ascent or descent, passing numerous caves which served as living quarters, equipment and explosives stores and medical bays. Some of the caves have been restored, with some featuring reconstructed scenes of daily wartime life, and there are numerous lookout posts and gun emplacements overlooking the surrounding area. The path through the tunnels is protected with cable and helmets and headtorches are essential, both of which can be hired from a small shop located beside the cable car station. The descent from the summit and from many of the climbs follows the Kaiserjaeger path - a route used by the Austrian troops from the summit to the base of the face. The path crosses a characteristic suspension bridge and exits by the Vonbank trench and is a worthy itinerary in itself, making for a pleasant descent at the end of the day.
