Averau

Despite its modest proportions, Averau forms quite a striking presence when viewed from the Falzarego Pass, perched like a top hat on the slopes above the more famous Cinque Torri. It is home to a popular via ferrata, and the surrounding scenery and excellent rifugios make it the ideal location for a relaxing day out. Coming from Val Badia, it is equally easy to take the Cinque Torri chairlift. From the Falzarego Pass, descend the SS48 towards Cortina d'Ampezzo. At a prominent hairpin, turn into the large, well-signed car park at the 'Cinque Torri lift station'. It is also possible to avoid the lift charges by driving up an access track up to Rifugio Cinque Torri, below the towers themselves. This is a longer walk in but is convenient if you are combining Averau with other itineraries in the area on the same day. The access track is on the right-hand side of the road when descending from the Falzarego Pass towards Cortina, after the car park for the chairlift. The road has 2.5m height barrier and is closed during the day in peak season, with a taxi shuttle service running. There is limited parking at the top and little room to manoeuvre; worth bearing in mind on busy days in a larger vehicle. There are paths underneath both chairlifts for those wanting to save the cash and hike up - allow about an hour of steep walking from either one.
